Abstract: This article proposes the study and analysis of the risks associated to complex machines, namely the collaborative robots. Currently, collaborative robots are in full development with application already identified in different sectors of activity and with great potential compared to other complex machines.However for new working situations could be necessary to use new risk assessment approach, suitable to deal with all new parameters and new risks generated by the collaborative work between a (complex) machine and human beings.In this sense, it is important to assess the risks of this type of machines, and this may addresses to the need of different methodology of risk assessment to be used in new and complex cases like these seems to are.In view of this scenario, a comparative study was carried out between two risk assessment methodologies in order to identify risk management tools for decision support and thus to support the manufacturers and users of these machines (collaborative robots) in the use of appropriate and reliable methodologies.The study compares two methodologies of risk assessment (in real context). The “RCM - Reliability Centred Maintenance”, complex and exigent one normally used in the airspace industry, and the “Risk Matrix”, a simple methodology currently in use for the safety of machines and work equipment.This study will evaluate the quality of results regarding the application of the RCM methodology, tested and recognized in a sector known of great criticality, in another developing industrial sector. On the other hand, the quality of information obtained from a simple and frequently used methodology between manufacturers and users of these complex machines will also be evaluated.
